Little Free Libraries to Serve Phoenix Kids

Local businesses have partnered with City of Phoenix to house “little libraries” for the Phoenix youth. These little libraries offer children’s books at a variety of reading levels to boost the youth’s reading proficiency and overall literacy.

The first of these little libraries in partnership with the city has opened inside of Roy’s Barbershop at 19th Ave. and Osborn Rd. City of Phoenix has plans to open 10 of these little libraries with other local businesses, Habitat for Humanity and low-income school districts.

Though not as prevalent in the Phoenix area compared to other cities, the nonprofit organization Little Free Library, served as the influence for this child literacy movement with over 50,000 Little Free Libraries worldwide. You can take a book or leave one at any of the little libraries and be a part of a community exchanging books one hand at a time.

Habitat for Humanity provided the materials and constructed the first of these libraries that resembles a wooden dollhouse with bookshelves rather than dolls and toy furniture.

The new little libraries will be registered with Little Free Library and receive an official plaque from the organization.
