Grant Awards Phoenix $6.4 Million To Replace Aging Buses

The city of Phoenix will receive a $6.4 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration, which is part of a $366.2 million grant intended to improve America’s bus systems.

Phoenix’s funds are intended to replace a portion of the fleet’s aging buses. Other cities throughout the United States will put their money towards replacing buses and upgrading facilities.

Benefits of the new buses include a decrease in maintenance costs, assisting with overcrowding and improving the quality of service.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced the news on Tuesday.

“These grants will help rebuild and modernize bus systems across the country for greater safety,” said Chao.

The entire grant of $366.2 million is being spent on either bus or bus facility enhancement throughout 107 projects across 50 states and territories.

A total of 255 applications for the funds were submitted with the requests totaling close to $2 billion.

Valley Metro has been the primary bus service offered in Phoenix, providing routes of transit throughout the Valley since 1993.
