Following the announcement from the 108-year old organization that it was dropping the “Boy” from its name, the Boy Scouts have had a lawsuit filed against them by the Girl Scouts of the USA. Earlier this year, it was announced that the Boy Scouts of America would begin accepting girls into its program and that, in 2019, the name would officially be changed to Scouts BSA.

Girl Scouts of the USA filed the lawsuit in federal court on Tuesday. The complaint states that the organization currently known as the Boy Scouts of America has no right to use “scouts” or “scouting.” Further, it alleges that the Girl Scouts’ brand will be damaged and marginalized if the Boy Scouts of America is allowed to brand itself as Scouts BSA.

“Only GSUSA has the right to use the Girl Scouts and Scouts trademarks with leadership development services for girls,” reads the complaint.

The change originally came forth as a result of complaints by parents. Boy Scouts of America states that it is reviewing the lawsuit.

“We applaud every organization that builds character and leadership in children, including the Girl Scouts of the USA, and believe that there is an opportunity for both organizations to serve girls and boys in our communities,” reads a statement put forth by the Boy Scouts of America.

It’s been reported that the lawsuit is seeking monetary damages and an injunction against trademark infringement.
