FDA Recalls Blood Pressure and Heart Medications Citing Potential Cancer Risk

The FDA recently recalled medications containing the ingredient valsartan which is found in medications such as Major Pharmeceuticals’ Valsartan, Solco Healthcare’s Valsartan and Valsartan/Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), and Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd.’s Valsartan and Valsartan/Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). The recall comes after the discovery of an impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which, according to lab tests, is a possible human carcinogen.

These medications treat serious medication conditions such as high blood pressure and heart failure. Patients taking any of the recalled medicines should follow the recall instructions provided on the FDA’s website. Patients should also contact their doctors or pharmacists to discuss alternative prescriptions. Despite the recall, it is important for patients taking the recalled medication to continue taking their medication as prescribed until they receive a substitute prescription. The FDA is continuing its investigation and will provide additional details as they become available.
