DPS’s 30 Day ‘Operation No Need For Speed’ in Phoenix

Starting this week, the Arizona Department of Public Safety has begun ticketing all cars caught speeding during a 30-day operation they’re referring to as ‘Operation No Need for Speed.’

Over the next 30 days, Troopers will mainly focus on Loops 101, 202, and 303 in Phoenix. Noting, “We will be out in our unmarked cars” DPS Director Col. Frank Milstead wants drivers to expect to get pulled over if speeds exceed limits along these routes.

News of the operation comes just weeks after several dangerous crashes have occurred in the area. Milstead maintains that the operation is not to meet ticket quotas but to keep Phoenix’s roads safe. “Unfortunately, at the speeds people are driving – 80 to 85 mph – when something goes wrong – and it will go wrong, somebody will do something inappropriate – things go wrong real fast and real violently.”

On, Milstead’s orders, troopers are required to give tickets, not warnings. “This is a zero-tolerance enforcement program,” he said. “Everybody will get a citation and that’s coming from me, so if you get one, I made the trooper do it.”
