The Sears location in the Metrocenter in Phoenix, is set to close its doors this June, according to a recent report.

This is the only Arizona-located Sears store that has been scheduled to close after an announcement Thursday, May 31 that Sears Holdings, the company that operates Sears and Kmart stores, would be closing 48 Sears and 15 Kmart locations this September.

According to the company it will slate its liquidation sales as early as June 14 at the stores set to close.

There are 44 stores in Arizona that operate under the Sears brand; this includes 15 Hometown stores, 11 auto centers, 11 department stores, and seven appliance/outlet locations, though the Hometown locations are owned and operated by a separate company.

According to the report, Sears has indicated the auto center at Metrocenter would close in late June.

The Metrocenter, located west of I-17 and Peoria Ave. opened its doors in 1973 but according to recent reports has been struggling to turnover a profit since 2010.

It is owned by Carlyle Development Group; the company purchased the 1.3 million square feet location in 2012.

The mostly-barren center offers a Dillard’s department store as well as a theatre and animal-adoption location, though a Walmart Supercenter opened last October.

Local resident Lorna Norman said she shopped at Sears as a child and also took her children there.

She reminisced about the former indoor ice rink there before it closed nearly 20 years ago in 1990.

“This used to be one of the happening places,” Norman said in the report.
