Arizona Families Have Uphill Climb

Struggling to support your family in Arizona? You aren’t alone according to a recent report. WalletHub, a financial website started in 2013, released its yearly list of Best and Worst States to Raise a Family earlier this month.

While Massachusetts, Minnesota, and New Hampshire earned top spots, Arizona was ranked fortieth. Forty-two individual qualities are measured to compile the list and draws from a variety of national sources. These characteristics include diverse items such as housing, unemployment, graduation rates, family attractions, and health and safety.

In addition to its low family score, Arizona also fared poorly with affordability at forty-ninth. Childcare costs challenge many families and WalletHub’s list backs up information published by The National Women’s Law Center in December. That study found Arizona to have the lowest child care assistance rates in the country. Access to quality child care ties closely to school success.

Southern states populated the bottom ten on the list. Alabama, Mississippi, and New Mexico rounded out the list as the least desirable places for families.
