Alabama Lawsuit Against 2020 Census Adds Arizona To The Case

Out-of-state voters now have the ability to join in a Alabama lawsuit aiming to exclude illegal U.S. residents from being counted in the 2020 U.S. Census, said a federal judge.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge David Proctor ruled that groups of Latino voters from California, Florida, Arizona, and Texas can join in the case as can an advocacy group.

The California-based civil rights organizations MALDEF, along with voters contend that the Trump administration cannot be trusted to adequately defend the lawsuit.

In May, the Census Bureau was sued by Alabama and U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks. If the Census count includes large numbers of people in the U.S. illegally, another state could gain a congressional seat at the expense of Alabama.

Thomas A. Saenz, president of MALDEF, says Alabama sued for illegitimate political reasons.
