$425K Raised From License Plates for Non-Profits Against Child Abuse

Last week, seventeen of Arizona’s non-profit organizations devoted to preventing child abuse and neglect shared $425,000 in grants from the Child Abuse and Prevention License Plate Program.

The remarkable fundraising was due to the statewide sale of “It Shouldn’t Hurt to Be a Child” license plates. The specialty plates reflect the mission statements of the multiple organizations dedicated to improving the lives of children nationwide.

The Child Abuse Prevention License Plate Program has raised more than $9 million in grants for non-profits since its implementation in 1999. The program was founded by partners including the Arizona Community Foundation, the Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family and The Arizona Republic. This year, awarded grant amounts ranged from $7,500 to $40,000, awarded based on financial need and visible results of programs.

Among the largest grants this year are Arizona’s Children Association- Phoenix, receiving $40,000, as well as Casa de los Niños- Tucson, Child Crisis Arizona- Phoenix, Southwest Human Development- Phoenix, and The First Steps program of Child & Family Resources Inc.- Tucson, all awarded $35,000 grants.

The grants are essential to the inspirational work the advocacy organizations do to prevent child abuse. Spokesperson Marcia Stanton for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, a beneficiary organization of the grants, stated “Without that funding, the work we’ve been doing wouldn’t be possible”.

Arizona residents can participate in the charitable fundraising program by ordering their own plate online. “It Shouldn’t Hurt to Be a Child” plates are available for purchase at servicearizona.com for $25. $17 of each annual tax-deductible sale goes toward the grant fund and $8 covers an administrative fee. In 2014, more than 16,000 vehicles were registered in the program.
